The Bitou Municipality proudly handed over 41 title deeds to the beneficiaries of the 169 Housing Project in Qolweni. The event was attended by Bitou Executive Mayor, Cllr Jessica Kamkam, Deputy Executive Mayor, Cllr Nokuzola Kolwapi, Speaker, Cllr Mavis Busakwe, and Ward 3 Councillor, Cllr Thembela Mhlana.

In her address, Mayor Kamkam emphasised the importance of holding a title deed, urging beneficiaries to never underestimate its value.

Image removed."A title deed is tangible evidence of ownership of your home and land. Many are still waiting for this opportunity, but today, you are fortunate to have it in your hands. Take care of it, as it represents not only your family but future generations. It is crucial to keep it safe," she said.

Deputy Mayor Kolwapi expressed gratitude to the national government, for prioritizing housing needs.

She acknowledged Cllr Mhlana for remembering the community’s housing needs and remarked, "These title deeds today serve as a legacy for the beneficiaries. In the future, when ownership is discussed, these very same deeds will stand as proof of your heritage."

Reflecting on her own childhood in Bossiesgif, she added, "My parents came to Plett seeking economic opportunities, and in those days, people had to produce a pass. Today, people produce title deeds to prove ownership of their land."

Ward 3 Councillor Mhlana affirmed, "Today, we confirm that this house we gave you, officially belongs to you through the title deed."

He reminded the beneficiaries of their responsibility to pay for municipal services. He explained that when people apply for indigent status, councillors must ensure that they genuinely qualify. "For those who are employed and afford to pay for services, we cannot sign their indigent applications, as the municipality relies on funds from rates and services to continue delivering to the community.
