Today, 12 September 2024, Bitou Executive Mayor, Councillor Jessica Kamkam, delivered the keynote address at the opening of the newly renovated Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP) support room at the Plettenberg Police Station.

The newly decorated room offers victims of gender-based violence a safe and dignified space when reporting crimes.
Designed to ensure comfort and minimize the potential for re-victimization, the room is equipped with a toilet, toys for children, and comfortable seating. It will also serve as a space where local NGOs can provide counselling sessions for victims.

At the tearjerking event, councillor Kamkam joined the Garden Route District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, Plettenberg Bay acting station commander, Lt. Col. Michaels, CPF Executive Member, Anne Windvogel, and local crime busters Otto Olivier and Ina Olivier, among others.

In her address, Mayor Kamkam highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving this milestone: "Today is proof that when we work together, we can make a real difference in the lives of the most vulnerable in society."

She emphasized the impact of the support room: "This may seem like a small gesture, but to victims of crime, it means everything. Imagine the difference a safe space can make in such a traumatic moment.”

The Mayor also extended her gratitude to the South African Police Service (SAPS), local Crime Prevention Forums, neighbourhood watches, and sponsors for their invaluable contributions to this project.
