Christmas arrived early for Mr Khedamile Windvoel and Mrs Nomvula Windvoel, an elderly couple from KwaNokuthula, who recently received a new home after losing their previous one to a devastating fire at 70 Sajini Street. The fire destroyed their house leaving them without a permanent home for years.
The plight of the Windvoel couple was brought to the attention of Ward 6 Councillor Nokuthula Seti and Bitou Municipality's Human Settlement Manager, Mr Fezile Maki, after concerned residents raised the issue at various public meetings.
Mr. Maki, who first learned of the couple’s situation during a Ward 6 meeting, engaged the Western Cape Provincial Human Settlement officials. An application for the Emergency Housing Program was submitted in 2022, and after approval, the procurement process began. The winning tender was awarded to a local contractor, Sidonela, a woman. The project was completed on time and within budget.
Councillor Seti expressed gratitude that the initiative to assist the couple was supported by all councillors, highlighting the collaborative effort to ensure the successful completion of the project.
"Seeing the smiles on the faces of this elderly couple, who are finally receiving their new home, is a powerful lesson in patience and perseverance," said Councillor Seti.
"It shows the importance of raising concerns while trusting the process."
Bitou Executive Mayor Councillor Claude Terblanche also acknowledged the couple's patience, though he cautioned against the need for people to raise their voices to be heard.
He praised Mr Maki for his dedication and passion in ensuring that all residents are treated equally and with respect, regardless of their background. He also commended Councillor Seti for her role in delivering the house, ensuring that the family no longer has to live in a shack.
Mr Windvoel, born in 1940, expressed his joy and gratitude for the new house.
"My heart is jumping up and down, celebrating that I have a home again after being victimized by the fire. It is good to wait; even if you sit on a church chair, you must be calm and wait for your right time, and you will be happy," he said.
His wife added, "I thank God for what has happened and wish to bless everyone who participated in building our house."
