Earlier today, 06 August 2024, the Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure, Mr. Tertuis Simmers, was in Bitou to hand over certificates to the beneficiaries of a bricklaying training program.
This program, titled "Youth in Building Environment," is a partnership initiative with CoroBrik and the Western Cape Government.
The program included 18 young participants from all the wards of Bitou Municipality, comprising 11 females and 7 males. It involved three weeks of theoretical studies followed by two months of practical fieldwork.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Mayor Councillor Nokuzola Kolwapi thanked the program facilitators and highlighted the significance of this initiative for women, especially as it coincides with Women’s Month in August.
"Bricklaying is a male-dominated industry; however, the women who have completed this course have demonstrated that women are more than capable," said Councillor Kolwapi.
Meanwhile, Minister Tertuis Simmers, acknowledged the contributions of CoroBrik, NHBRC, and other stakeholders in making the program a success.
"If it were not for CoroBrik, NHBRC, and all other stakeholders who participated, we would not be here today. I say this knowing very well how it feels to be an unemployed youth from this area, as I also come from this town," said Minister Simmers.
He emphasised the need for more women in the industry and encouraged young people to actively participate in society, as they are the future of the country.
The closing remarks were delivered by Adv. Chantal Smith, Head of the Department of Infrastructure.
She encouraged the award recipients to fully leverage the opportunities that this program could create for their future and expressed gratitude to everyone who played a crucial role in its success.
