Bitou Municipality hosted the SANDF's Military Academy based in Saldanha as it embarked on its annual exercise named "the Trans Enduro" today, December 4, 2023.
The Trans Enduro is a land and sea expedition from Gqeberha to Saldanha, and Plettenberg Bay is an essential stop on this expedition.
Bitou and the SANDF's Military Academy in Saldanha have a longstanding relationship whereby Bitou has benefited from their visits through various projects.
This year, the Siyakhula Creche based in Bossiesgif was the beneficiary of the visit as the team spruced up any outstanding maintenance needs, planted a garden for them, and donated food and knee and elbow pads for two special needs children.
Last year, The New Life Creche was the selected beneficiary. The students from the academy spent time working at the creche and handed over materials and equipment for the children.
Previously, they also provided much-needed assistance to Plett Meal Centre in Bossiesgif and the Emanuel Educare in Kwanokuthula.
Speaking at the short ceremony held at Central Beach today where the Cycling, Running and Sea Team were launched, Bitou Executive Mayor Councillor Dave Swart lauded the different teams present.
Councillor Swart said: " It's encouraging to see the passion displayed by young women and men as you go about the community engagements as part of the Trans Enduro, which I believe is in the 41st year.
Speaking to the students, Councillor Swart said the team moving along benefits the communities.
"Besides the community. It's also an important program for you as military students and aspirant leaders.
"The planning, the combination, and the rollout of the programme are also important for your development in teaching everyone how to work together, overcome obstacles, make key decisions, and ultimately your development as leaders."
The team moves on to George Municipality, where they will hand over a letter of Goodwill from Bitou Municipality.
