Bitou Municipality has ramped up efforts to end the illegal sale of scrap metals especially municipal infrastructure.

On Tuesday Law Enforcement officials, with SAPS and Plettenberg Bay ADT embarked on an intelligence-driven blitz at scrap yards in town.

Four scrapyards were visited today in Kranshoek, Crags and two in Bossesgieff on the hunt for illegal goods.

Two illegal scrapyards in Crags and Kranshoek were issued with a notice of compliance certificates by the SAPS.

Speaking on the operation, Senior Inspector from Bitou Law Enforcement, Mr. Xolani Bangela, said they had embarked on the operation as a cost-saving exercise.

“As you may be aware, stolen municipal property can result in significant financial loss and may impact the smooth functioning of our community.

“We believe that through this concerted effort, we can tackle this issue effectively and ensure the recovery of the stolen items,” he said.

Bangela said more of these operations were set to happen again.

Previously Bitou Law Enforcement had undertaken a safer school’s program where search dogs were used to find illegal weapons and drugs at Bitou schools.

Other health and safety operations were conducted at shops where expired goods were found.
