Bitou Municipality's Waste Management and Environmental Department have kicked off a Recycling education and awareness programme called I-Recycle. The I-RECYCLE programme is an ongoing tour to all Bitou Schools, creches, safe homes, libraries, and youth clubs with the purpose to reach young learners. The recycling programme includes various activities such as questionnaires, posters, competition puzzles, and community recyclables’ collection competitions. The main aim is to have a recycling club in each school or social club, collecting waste to help with the waste minimization programme. The progress will be monitored in all schools.
Recycling awareness has been done to Kwanokuthula Primary School, Formosa Primary School and Born in Africa. Presentations about the importance of recycling in our schools and communities were done. The communities of Plettenberg Bay are facing a huge challenge of illegal dumping, next to Churches, Community Halls, Open spaces, and schools. Kids must know that it is important to minimize the amount of waste that goes into the transfer station and they must know that they must use our resources sustainably for future generations.
